Southlands is a senior school for children with moderate learning difficulties a number of whom have additional social, emotional and behavioural difficulties or other more complex needs. It is a small school on a pleasant site. It is surrounded by playing fields and is within a mile of the sea. The school is well equipped and well cared for – it has won the council’s school environment award four times in the last five years. Students are taught in small classes, which ensures that attention can be given to each student’s individual needs. All staff set out to create a safe, pleasant and caring atmosphere in which all students can make academic progress and can develop their personal, social and emotional skills. The concept of respect is central to the work of the school as is its application in relationships at work, at home and in the community. A robust code of behaviour reinforcing positive achievement is used consistently throughout the school.
